Research Fields
Intertidal and supply-side ecology, barnacle ecology, larval ecology
Major Research Achievements (2013-2017)
  • I am a marine larval and intertidal ecologist with research interests in the effect of larval supply, settlement and post-settlement mortality on the distribution and abundance of marine organisms. My Ph.D. study used two common rocky shore barnacle species, Tetraclita squamosa and Tetraclita japonica (Chan, 2001, 2003) as an example to study the effect of salinity and physical stress on the settlement and population dynamics of intertidal barnacles (Chan et al., 2001; Chan and Williams, 2003, 2004; Chan and Hung, 2005). To further study the effect of latitudinal gradient on the distribution pattern of intertidal assemblages in the Asia region, my recent research focusing on the investigating the distribution and population structure of Tetraclita spp. along the latitudinal gradient from Japan, Taiwan, Okinawa, Xiamen and Hong Kong (Chan and Murata, manuscript). In addition, I have involved in the design of a plankton trap (Yan et al., 2003) which can be used to monitor the effect of larval supply on the subsequent population structure of barnacles at different spatial scales. In 2005, as a co-investigator with colleagues in the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong, a grant (1.3 million HK dollars) was awarded by the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong to study the supply side ecology of Tetraclita in the S.E. Asia region.
  • Besides working on the rocky intertidal system, I am also interested in sandy shore ecology (see Chan and Caley, 2003). I have studied the factors affecting the fitness of the sandy shore snail Batillaria zonalis (Chan and Chan, 2005) and developed techniques in investigating the burrow structure of soft shore organisms (Chan et al., in press).
  • In addition, my recent research focuses on the ecology of the parasitic barnacles (Rhizocephala). I have addressed the occurrence and distribution of two Sacculina species in Hong Kong (Chan, 2004; Chan et al., 2005). Further directions are focusing on the factor affecting the sex ratio of Rhizocephala larvae.
